What is Fourth Wing about?

Last updated: 2026-10-16

Fourth Wing is a dragon-rider romantasy novel by Rebecca Yarros — the first book in the Empyrean series — about twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail, who is forced by her general mother to enter the brutal Rider Quadrant of Basgiath War College, where cadets either bond a dragon or die trying.

Published on April 5, 2023, the book became a #1 New York Times and Amazon bestseller, powered largely by BookTok word of mouth. The sequel Iron Flame followed in November 2023, and Onyx Storm, the third of a planned five books, arrived in January 2025.

At Basgiath, dragons choose their riders during an event called Threshing. A bonded rider gains mind-to-mind communication, lesser magic, and eventually a signet — a unique magical ability shaped by the rider.

The series blends military academy survival, dragon bonding, romance, and war politics in the kingdom of Navarre, and its motto is blunt: graduate or die.
