What dragons are in Fourth Wing?

Last updated: 2026-10-16

The most important dragons in Fourth Wing are Tairn (a black Morningstartail, bonded to Violet), Sgaeyl (a blue Daggertail, bonded to Xaden), and Andarna (a rare gold Feathertail who also bonds Violet); other named dragons include Cath, Feirge, Deigh, Codagh, and Baide.

In the books, every dragon is identified by color — black, blue, green, red, orange, brown, or the hidden iridescent den — and by tail type, such as Morningstartail, Daggertail, Swordtail, Clubtail, Scorpiontail, or juvenile Feathertail. Color points to the dragon's den and ancestry; tail type signals how it fights.

Details

Black dragons like Tairn and Codagh descend from the cunning Dubhmadinn line and are among the rarest and most powerful. Blue dragons like Sgaeyl are formidable and ruthless. Reds have violent tempers, oranges are unpredictable, greens are intelligent, and browns are associated with loyalty.

Dragons choose their riders at Basgiath War College — and a dragon is never owned. Bonded pairs can be mated too: Tairn and Sgaeyl are described as the strongest bonded pair in centuries.

FAQ

What kind of dragon is Tairn?
Tairneanach (Tairn) is a black Morningstartail — described as a killing machine, and the smartest and rarest type of dragon. He is bonded to Violet Sorrengail.

What kind of dragon is Sgaeyl?
Sgaeyl is a blue Daggertail — the rarest of the blues, a ruthless type that doesn't comply with the law. She is bonded to Xaden Riorson and mated to Tairn.

Why is Andarna special?
Andarna appears as a young gold Feathertail — a color and age no one at Basgiath took seriously — and becomes the second dragon to bond Violet, which was thought impossible. Later books connect her to the hidden iridescent den.
